There are as many answers as there are ways to understand Catalan identity, and all of them are correct. When the goal is to measure feelings and perceptions, a subjective question will only generate subjective answers. The challenge is finding one that satisfies everyone.
What does it mean to feel Catalonia?
This was the starting point for the briefing to design the institutional image for the 2024 National Day, which for the third year in a row, came from a participatory action organized by the Generalitat and advised by ADG-FAD. The winner, Sergi Delgado from Diatomic Studio, addressed the challenge by grouping the different options into three key concepts that shaped his graphic proposal: UNITY, IDENTITY, and LOVE.
Through the geometric shapes used to create the heart, a series of straight or curved lines that intersect, many new shapes are generated—up to 50—that enrich the concepts of unity, identity, and love. While most viewers might agree in recognizing fields of barley, spikes of wheat, knots, mountains, or ocean waves, the work of abstraction done with these alternative illustrations also allows free interpretation thanks to a low degree of iconicity. The result: as many interpretations as there are ways of feeling Catalan identity.
